The Maryland General Assembly session is about 2/3rd’s of the way through.

Here’s a very quick update as some action has finally started to happen in the areas of criminal law and DUI/DWI laws:

  1. The Governor has threatened to veto any medical marijuana bill.
  2. The General Assembly is toying with legislation that legislatively allows DRE (drug recognition experts) opinions in court.  For reasons that are too long for the purposes of this post, it’s a bad idea.  More to come in a future post.
  3. The Office of the Public Defender has gotten an additional stay in the Richmond case.  Legislators are working on a remedy.  House & Senate bills.
  4. Oh, and our pesky Supreme Court making police get warrants to GPS a suspects car.  Will Maryland’s General Assembly follow suit?  I suspect we’ll see action in this area akin to a Title III wiretap legislation in next year’s legislative session, not this year.

Bottom line – if you are charged with driving while under the influence of drugs or drugs and/or alcohol you need to find a Maryland Attorney who has previous experience with such cases.

I’m attending a dinner in two weeks where one of the topics will be the General Assembly session.  Look for a full update around the last week of March.
